Galerie Triangle Bleu is pleased to welcome the artist Romain Van Wissen for his first personal exhibition in Stavelot. This presentation confirms the gallery’s dual ambition to engage with a dynamic direction in contemporary painting, while also bringing the young Belgian and international artistic scene to the foreground.

Born in 1965, Romain Van Wissen clearly defines himself as a painter. The approach that underlies his practice is based on compositions that employ elements of different kinds. In a very singular manner, his painting acquires an air of complexity through this form of assemblage. It becomes composite. The artist indeed transcends the usual classifications of the genre: his painting exists beyond the boundary that separates abstraction from figuration. It exists outside the realm of a sensual or geometric approach. It is unclassifiable. Romain Van Wissen consciously eschews classifications. In contrast to the pioneers of abstract painting, he evolved from abstraction to a certain – extremely precise – form of figuration. He introduced a horizon, inducing, in this way, a certain idea of the landscape. His landscapes have formed naturally, like emotional landscapes, in which the viewer will recognize the most common places they experience on a daily basis. Architectural structures have also emerged in the image, simple constructions as well as more typical buildings. The paintings presented in the gallery also reveal a new direction in the work of the artist. Figures make their appearance, creating scenes that are both idiosyncratic and unique. But even if we recognize these elements, the painting transcends figuration, if only through its particular composition. The perspective has disappeared. In the same way, geometric patterns direct the gaze; they function as a framework while thwarting too simple a reading. We could say that the work of Romain Van Wissen is based on an emancipated painting, as is the case for many of the artists of the gallery. He is also not the kind of artist that can be easily categorized. Categories do not concern him. He likes to remind us: „I was born in the 1960s, when the death of painting was announced. I wasn’t aware of this when I started to paint.“
So, what do these paintings tell us? If one would try to understand these paintings as simple images, one would see a succession of intimate elements, the type of ultimately banal places each of us has the habit of coming across without ever really paying attention to. Each of us makes a representation of the world through their own experience. Consequently, there are as many interpretations of reality as there are individuals, reality is but a consensus. The artist is the one who, in the field of art, renders his interpretation of the world. This is how Romain Van Wissen paints his cosmogony. His landscapes and his architectures are shared stories of intimate experiences: a party, a theatre, desolation. The interpretation of the meaning of these memories remains open … All of the open windows in these paintings constitute a panoptic landscape. The viewer chooses to look at this or the other window, he will enter and leave them as he pleases. It is a unique experience of perception.
The titles chosen by the artist for his works confuse us even more. They reflect a sense of humor that contrasts with the mental and internal character of the elements that make up the image. The artist handles them is a playful and delectable way. Above all, however, he practices painting. We are confronted with an art without artifice, much like the manner in which today’s wines are produced, without artifice. The painting suffices in itself, it does not need additives of any kind. Nor does it need classification, or discourse. It reveals both its proper nature and its irregularities all the better.

If it suffices in itself, it is only because painting has this ability to act beyond painting. It is never a simple image.

Fata Morgana

FATA MORGANA

12.01. – 06.04.2014

English

On the occasion of its inaugural exhibition which opens the season 2014, the ikob combines gaps and diffractions and turns into a place of joined mirages, an interlacing of seemingly incompatible spaces and imaginations. Based on the observation of the current fragmentation of contemporary space, Fata Morgana urges the visitor to experience the place’s opening up to other spaces and visions of reality through the work of 17 artists of different generations and cultural background. What appears “here and now” is a series of spaces coming from elsewhere and belonging to another reality, that form a doorstep to our own reality – disclosing at the same time the latter’s heterogeneity. A disturbing experience… where our practice of reality repeatedly sways into some other dimensions coming from elsewhere…

Deutsch
